There comes a time in every calendar year when someone looks around the office, or across a family WhatsApp chat, and says those four little words: “We should do something.” Suddenly, you’re in charge of finding a venue that works for everyone from the cocktail-sipping colleague to Uncle Barry who refuses to stand unless there’s a chair involved.
Toro Bar & Kitchen, in the heart of Maroochydore, seems to have been designed with exactly that moment in mind. Owner Jaime Badia, who swapped Seville for the Sunshine Coast nearly a decade ago, has built a space that caters to groups of ten through to two hundred, and everything in between.
“It’s about making it easy,” Jaime says. “People can overcomplicate functions. In here, you can go into all the little details if you want, or you can just tell me you’ve got 50 people and a budget, and I’ll make it happen.”
That’s music to the ears of anyone who’s ever been roped into organising an event. Toro offers flexibility for a cocktail style, sit-down dinner, casual bites or a more formal service, but the real drawcard is that you can hand over the responsibility and trust it will be delivered exceptionally.
Toro’s menu has quickly built a reputation for food that balances flair with familiarity. Spanish-inspired dishes sit comfortably alongside local produce, creating a style that’s recognisable without being predictable.
The crowd-pleasers? Corn ribs dusted in spices, fried chicken that disappears faster than you can say “pass the plate” skewers of chicken or pork, and potatoes that take on near-cult status among regulars. For those wanting to raise the bar, there’s beef tartare, quality steaks with a mojo verde, or smaller plates designed for grazing.
“Our style is casual & simple. Just food, flavour, comfort,” Jaime says. And when you’re feeding forty, fifty or sixty guests, that philosophy works. It’s relaxed dining without the risk of running out of substance.
The clientele has come via the old-fashioned art of recommendation.
“One guest comes in, enjoys the food and atmosphere, and returns the following week with a friend in tow,” Jaime says. “It’s a slower build but I believe it’s a more consistent build.”
Of course, functions are about more than food. Toro leans into atmosphere with options for live music, DJs or even magicians if you’re that way inclined.
Regular events already on the calendar include Sangria Sundays with live guitar, monthly flamenco shows, and the occasional Latin party, helping shape the venue into more than just a restaurant.
It’s a place where eating and entertainment blend into a single experience. If you’re looking to add a spark to your gathering, Jaime and his team can build it in.
“There are possibilities for any kind of entertainment people might be interested in,” he says.
And yes, though we might not like to admit it, Christmas is closer than we think.
For many businesses and families, the idea of locking in a date, a menu, and a space now can be the difference between a calm December and a last-minute scramble. Toro Bar & Kitchen’s range of options makes it a practical choice for an end-of-year celebration, whether it’s a small team raising a glass or a company-wide gathering with live music.
But it would be a mistake to think Toro is only about Christmas parties. The same flexibility that makes it perfect for December works just as well for birthdays, anniversaries, or the “we should do something” gatherings that fill the rest of the year.
There’s something reassuring about a place that doesn’t overcomplicate things. This place has the space, the food, and the atmosphere, but perhaps more importantly, it has an owner who understands that most of us just want the night to run smoothly.
You could spend hours drawing up spreadsheets, agonising over set menus, and worrying about whether the sound system will work. Or, as Jaime suggests, you could walk into Toro with a budget and a headcount and walk out with the confidence that your guests will be well-fed, well-watered, and talking about the night for weeks to come.
Functions don’t have to be stressful.
At Toro Bar & Kitchen, they feel more like what they should be, an excuse to gather, to share food, and to enjoy each other’s company. And if you do happen to book your function before the Christmas rush? Consider it the gift you give yourself.
